In a bid to bypass distribution grid bottlenecks stalling heavy transport electrification, Greenstrum, the electric mobility charging arm of Ayala-led ACMobility, has teamed up with Huawei Technologies Philippines to deploy an integrated electric vehicle (EV) charging and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) designed for local enterprises.

Unveiled during their ‘New Energy Advantage’ business-to-business showcase in Bonifacio Global City, the technological partnership combines high-power direct current (DC) fast-charging architecture with a compact on-site battery storage footprint. The turn-key setup is geared toward property developers, commercial business districts, logistics depots, and corporate fleet operators seeking to transition to clean mobility without incurring multimillion-peso electrical distribution upgrades.

Mitigating Grid Strain and Peak-Demand Charges

Traditional high-capacity DC fast chargers, which range anywhere from 240 kilowatts (kW) to 480 kW, draw massive instantaneous electrical loads that frequently exceed the existing transformer capacities of commercial buildings. In the franchise areas of distribution utilities like Manila Electric Co. (Meralco), such heavy demand spikes often necessitate dedicated substations, costly interconnection works, and punitive peak-demand utility billing.

The integrated Huawei modular storage unit counteracts this obstacle by occupying a compact physical footprint of roughly two square meters. By functioning as an on-site energy buffer, the lithium-based system draws electricity gradually from the grid during low-cost, off-peak periods and discharges instantly when high-voltage vehicles plug in.

“The primary challenge for enterprises scaling up charging facilities lies in distribution limits and high demand charges,” emphasized Greenstrum Chief Operating Officer Carl Decloedt during the showcase. He noted that pairing fast chargers with modular storage decouples high-speed charging from direct substation constraints, significantly lowering the total cost of ownership for commercial adopters.

Commercial Appeal for Real Estate and Fleet Operators

Targeting major real estate developers, including industry players like DMCI Homes and Daiichi Properties, the initiative addresses the growing requirement for high-density, green-certified amenities across high-rise residential towers and prime office developments. Commercial properties are under rising pressure to furnish tenants with dependable charging amenities without derailing building operations.

Furthermore, commercial logistics companies managing light-duty electric delivery vans stand to benefit from the technology’s load-balancing capabilities. Instead of facing compounding peak-load charges during concurrent fleet charging sessions at depot facilities, corporate fleet managers can tap into the BESS reserves to shave peak electricity draw while maintaining swift vehicle turnaround times.

Aligning With National Electrification Mandates

The technological launch coincides with heightened government implementation of Republic Act No. 11697, or the Electric Vehicle Industry Development Act (EVIDA). Under guidelines overseen by the Department of Energy (DOE), commercial properties and government institutions are required to allocate at least 5% of their total parking spaces to electric vehicle charging slots.

However, widespread institutional compliance has been moderated by physical space limitations and the extensive lead times required to procure upgraded utility transformers. By bundling DC hardware ranging up to 480 kW with ultra-compact battery reserves, the Greenstrum-Huawei venture delivers a pragmatic bridge between rigid power distribution realities and the country’s burgeoning clean transportation ambitions.
