{"id":19891,"date":"2024-07-24T03:01:40","date_gmt":"2024-07-24T03:01:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/energybuzz.ph\/staging\/6915\/ballet-philippines-turns-romantic\/"},"modified":"2024-07-24T03:01:40","modified_gmt":"2024-07-24T03:01:40","slug":"ballet-philippines-turns-romantic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/energybuzz.ph\/staging\/6915\/ballet-philippines-turns-romantic\/","title":{"rendered":"Ballet Philippines turns romantic"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p class=\"p2\"><a href=\"https:\/\/energybuzz.ph\/staging\/6915\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Final-Gala-Invite.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" fetchpriority=\"high\" loading=\"lazy\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" td-modal-image alignleft wp-image-609838\" src=\"https:\/\/energybuzz.ph\/staging\/6915\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Final-Gala-Invite.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/energybuzz.ph\/staging\/6915\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Final-Gala-Invite.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.bworldonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Final-Gala-Invite-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.bworldonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Final-Gala-Invite-280x420.jpg 280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\"><\/a>BALLET Philippines (BP) is opening its 55<sup>th<\/sup> season with one of the oldest surviving romantic ballets in history.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">For <i>La Sylphide<\/i>, the classical and contemporary dance company gives the choreography by Filippo Taglioni a distinct Filipino twist, according to BP artistic director Mikhail \u201cMisha\u201d Martynyuk.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">Recalling why they chose it as the season opener, Mr. Martynyuk told the press at the launch on July 16 at Solaire Resort that the ballet will bring BP to a different level. \u201cA new level of technique and purity of execution,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">The Russian choreographer then went on to detail <i>La Sylphide<\/i>\u2019s place in history \u2014 when it premiered in Paris in 1832, it revolutionized the art form as the first to be performed entirely <i>en pointe<\/i>. It also came about in the period when the diaphanous, calf-length skirt called the tutu became iconic in ballet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cThis performance is difficult for ballet dancers. It involves incredible stamina and a special technique of their feet, which our dancers have been training very, very hard to master,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">The story unfolds in Scotland, where James Ruben, a humble farmer, is enchanted by a forest fairy (otherwise known as a sylph). Despite already being engaged, James is enthralled by the sylph\u2019s otherworldly beauty and confession of love, leading him to follow the fairy into the forest.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">BP\u2019s rendition aims to \u201cintertwine the ballet\u2019s original charm with Filipino romanticism and mysticism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">With a libretto by Adolphe Nourrit and music by Jean-Madeleine Schneitzhoeffer, <i>La Sylphide <\/i>was also created by its original choreographer Taglioni to showcase the talent of his daughter, ballerina Marie Taglioni.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">This time, BP\u2019s dancers will use the material to showcase their own talents.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">At the preview, principal dancers Jemima Reyes and Ian Ocampo took the stage to perform the introduction piece, one that captures viewers\u2019 attention with mesmerizing movements.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">Principal dancers Regine Magbitang and Rudolph Capongcol also performed an excerpt from the show titled <i>The Promise<\/i>, another piece drawing on the strong chemistry between the two characters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s3\">Ballet Philippines president Kathleen <\/span>Liechtenstein told <i>BusinessWorld <\/i>that everyone should get ready to \u201cimmerse in a tremendous show.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">\u201cBringing this oldest romantic ballet to life is part of our commitment to pushing the boundaries of ballet in the Philippines,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s3\"><i>La Sylphide<\/i> inaugurates the season\u2019s theme of <i>relev\u00e9<\/i>, which in ballet means \u201cto rise onto the tips of the toes,\u201d Mr. Martynyuk said. It will run from Aug. 9 to 11 at The Theatre at Solaire, Para\u00f1aque.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">Other productions in BP\u2019s 55<sup>th<\/sup> season are the holiday offering <i>Peter Pan<\/i> which will have performances from Dec. 6 to 8, and the original Filipino production <i>Ang Panaginip<\/i> from Feb. 28 to March 2, 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">Tickets are available at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ballet.ph\/\"><i>http:\/\/www.ballet.ph<\/i><\/a> and via Ticketworld. \u2014 <b>Bront\u00eb H.
