The US Department of Energy<\/a> and the Geothermal Technologies Office<\/a> (GTO) has announced a second-round funding opportunity that can provide up to $14.2 million under the Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS) Pilot Demonstrations initiative. Letters of intent for this funding opportunity are required by the 18th of July\u00a0 2024 and full applications are due on the 25th of September 2024.<\/p>\n

Directed by the Biden-Harris Administration\u2019s landmark Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, these pilot projects will use innovative technologies and development techniques to demonstrate the potential for EGS to provide clean, reliable energy to Americans nationwide.<\/p>\n

This funding round will be for EGS demonstration projects in the eastern United States. The project must demonstrate EGS stimulation at a\u00a0well-characterized Eastern U.S. site, with existing well(s) in place and near-term electrical and\/or thermal power production potential.<\/p>\n

Three projects had already been selected<\/a> for $60 million funding in the first round of this funding initiative. The projects are by Chevron New Energies in California, Fervo Energy in Utah, and Mazama Energy in Oregon.<\/p>\n

The funding is aligned with the Biden Administration\u2019s Investing in America agenda and supports the goals of DOE\u2019s Enhanced Geothermal Shot,\u00a0which seeks to cuts the cost of EGS by 90% by 2035<\/a>.<\/p>\n
