{"id":19369,"date":"2024-06-20T03:02:26","date_gmt":"2024-06-20T03:02:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/energybuzz.ph\/staging\/6915\/philippines-slips-in-wef-energy-transition-index\/"},"modified":"2024-06-20T03:02:26","modified_gmt":"2024-06-20T03:02:26","slug":"philippines-slips-in-wef-energy-transition-index","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/energybuzz.ph\/staging\/6915\/philippines-slips-in-wef-energy-transition-index\/","title":{"rendered":"Philippines slips in WEF Energy Transition Index"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p class=\"p2\">THE PHILIPPINES dropped 11 spots in an index that measures countries\u2019 energy transition efforts, re<span class=\"s1\">f<\/span>lecting the slowing global <span class=\"s2\">momentum amid increasing <\/span><span class=\"s1\">un<\/span>certainty.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">The Philippines ranked 105<sup>th<\/sup> out of 120 countries in the World Economic Forum\u2019s (WEF) Energy Transition Index (ETI), from 94<sup>th<\/sup> in 2023.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">The Philippines\u2019 latest ranking was its lowest since 2015 when it ranked 87<sup>th<\/sup> in the ETI, which analyzes a country\u2019s current energy system performance and enabling environment for energy transition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><a title=\"Philippines falls in Energy Transition Index\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/142608056@N02\/53800776692\/in\/dateposted\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/energybuzz.ph\/staging\/6915\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/53800776692_f5142acee0_o.jpg\" alt=\"Philippines falls in Energy Transition Index\" width=\"300\" height=\"2920\"><\/a><script async src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>It scored 48.4% on a 0% to 100% scale, lower than 50.2% last year. This is below the global average score of 56.5% and emerging and developing Asia\u2019s average score of 53.9%.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">European countries topped this year\u2019s index led by Sweden with a score of 78.4, followed by Denmark (75.2), Finland (74.5), and Switzerland (73.4).<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">Among the emerging and developing Asian countries, the Philippines had one of the lowest rankings, only ahead of Bangladesh (109<sup>th<\/sup>), Pakistan (113<sup>rd<\/sup>) and Mongolia (116<sup>th<\/sup>).<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">China had the highest ranking among Asian countries at 17<sup>th<\/sup> place, followed by South Korea (23<sup>rd<\/sup>), Japan (26<sup>th<\/sup>), Vietnam (32<sup>nd<\/sup>), Malaysia (40<sup>th<\/sup>) and Indonesia (54<sup>th<\/sup>).<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">\u201cEnsuring equitable access to energy is a critical issue in this region, characterized by limited rural electricity access, affordability challenges, extensive energy subsidies and energy prices not returning to pre-pandemic levels,\u201d the WEF said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">The WEF noted this year saw the highest global average scores in the history of the energy transition index, \u201cwith modest improvements in system performance of about 0.2% and strong progress in transition readiness, with a growth of 2%.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">\u201cFrom 2015 to 2024, the global average scores for the ETI have consistently increased, driven by improvements in both system performance and transition readiness,\u201d the report read.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">However, WEF said the overall pace of energy transition has slowed worldwide, due to \u201ceconomic volatility, heightened geopolitical tensions and technological shifts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">\u201cWe must ensure that the energy transition is equitable, in and across emerging and developed economies,\u201d Roberto Bocca, WEF\u2019s head of the center for energy and materials, said in a news release.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">\u201cTransforming how we produce and consume energy is critical to success. We need to act on three key levers for the energy transition urgently: reforming the current energy system to reduce its emissions, deploying clean energy solutions at scale, and reducing energy intensity per unit of GDP (gross domestic product),\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">The latest annual edition of the report, published in collaboration with Accenture, used indicators such as energy access, energy affordability, economic development, supply, resilience, reliability, energy efficiency, decarbonized energy, clean energy, regulation and political commitment, <span class=\"s1\">f<\/span>inance and investment, education and human capital, innovation, and infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">Terry L. Ridon, a public investment analyst and convenor of think tank InfraWatch PH, said the Philippines still has limited innovation and research on low-carbon technology.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">\u201cGovernment should partner with other nations which have advanced low carbon research in order to develop our knowhow in this <span class=\"s1\">f<\/span>ield,\u201d he said in a Viber message. \u2014 <b>S.J.
