This is within the 3.7-4.5% forecast of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) for the month.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">If realized, May inflation would be faster than 3.8% in April but slower than the 6.1% print a year earlier.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Analysts\u2019 May inflation rate estimates\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/142608056@N02\/53764098040\/in\/dateposted\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" fetchpriority=\"high\" loading=\"lazy\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/energybuzz.ph\/staging\/6915\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/53764098040_3a069d6c8a_o.jpg\" alt=\"Analysts\u2019 May inflation rate estimates\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1024\"><\/a><script async src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">It would also mark the sixth straight month that inflation settled within the central bank\u2019s 2-4% target range.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s7\">The Philippine Statistics Authority is set to release May in<\/span><span class=\"s5\">f<\/span><span class=\"s7\">lation data on Wednesday (June 5).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">\u201cWe expect CPI inflation to rise to 4% in May. The rise largely comes on the back of unfavorable base effects, and the sequential momentum likely remained contained,\u201d Makoto Tsuchiya, an economist from Oxford Economics, said in an e-mail.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s5\">\u201cEven with a modest month-on-month pickup, base effects remain unfavorable, and we expect inflation to still accelerate to 4% year on year \u2014 touching the BSP\u2019s upper bound target,\u201d HSBC economist for ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) Aris D. Dacanay said in an e-mail.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">Analysts said the faster in<span class=\"s5\">f<\/span>lation print in May is primarily due to higher electricity rates.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s8\">\u201cUpward price pressures will come from higher electricity rates as retailers pass on higher costs from the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market amid a jump in electricity demand when temperatures spiked across the country in May,\u201d Moody\u2019s Analytics economist Sarah Tan said in an e-mail.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">\u201cThat also resulted in power shortages, which led authorities to issue the red and yellow alerts,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">From January to May, the National Grid Corp. of the Philippines had placed the Luzon and Visayas power grids on red alert for 12 and eight days, respectively.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s9\">Yellow alerts have been raised over Luzon and Visayas for a total of 27 and 26 days, respectively. Mindanao was placed under yellow alert for two days.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">\u201cThe heatwave increased demand and prices for electricity, with the latest increase in Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) electricity rates,\u201d Rizal Commercial Banking Corp. Chief Economist Michael L. Ricafort said in an e-mail.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s10\">Customers in areas served by Meralco saw their overall rate climb by P0.4621 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) to P11.4139 per kWh in May <\/span><span class=\"s11\">due to the increase in the generation charge. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">\u201cHowever, these upward pressures were tempered by lower costs of key food items such as rice, fish, and fruits, and rollbacks in LPG and domestic pump prices,\u201d Chinabank Research said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">Security Bank Corp. Chief Economist Robert Dan J. Roces said food price growth likely slowed in May, although rice will still remain a \u201cmajor culprit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">In April, rice in<span class=\"s5\">f<\/span>lation was recorded at 23.9%, easing from 24.4% in March. Rice inflation in March was its fastest print since February 2009.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">Agriculture department data showed that the average price of a kilogram of local well-milled rice ranged from P48-55 as of end-May while regular milled averaged P45-52 per kilogram.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p7\"><b>UPTREND<br \/>\n<\/b><span class=\"s11\">Chinabank Research said it expects in<\/span><span class=\"s5\">f<\/span><span class=\"s11\">lation to \u201csustain its recent uptrend and remain above the BSP\u2019s target until July, unless signi<\/span><span class=\"s5\">f<\/span><span class=\"s11\">icant price reversals materialize.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">Zamros Bin Dzulkafli, economist at Maybank Investment Banking Group, said that in<span class=\"s5\">f<\/span>lation would likely overshoot the 2-4% target band from May to July, in line with the central bank\u2019s expectations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s7\">The BSP is anticipating faster in<\/span><span class=\"s5\">f<\/span><span class=\"s7\">lation from May to July but expects in<\/span><span class=\"s5\">f<\/span><span class=\"s7\">lation to ease to the target after July. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s12\">\u201cWe expect the headline in<\/span><span class=\"s5\">f<\/span><span class=\"s12\">lation to hover around 4% in the coming few months, but this is unlikely to make the BSP more hawkish, as such an overshoot is already priced in <\/span><span class=\"s8\">by the central bank,\u201d Mr. Tsuchiya said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">Ms. Tan said if in<span class=\"s5\">f<\/span>lation settles below the upper end of the target, this would add to the case for a rate cut in August.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">\u201cThis is contingent on subsequent readings before the August policy meeting staying below, or at, the upper bound, which is what we are expecting. Otherwise, the <span class=\"s5\">f<\/span>irst cut may only come in the fourth quarter,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">BSP Governor Eli M. Remolona, Jr. earlier said the central bank can cut rates as early as August, possibly by 25 basis points (bps).<\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">Bank of the Philippine Islands Lead Economist Emilio S. Neri, Jr. said he expects the Monetary Board to \u201ckeep policy settings neutral\u201d at the June 27 meeting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">\u201cRhetoric could become even less hawkish, especially if headline prints fall below expectations,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s11\">\u201cI doubt that the May print will signi<\/span><span class=\"s5\">f<\/span><span class=\"s11\">icantly a<\/span><span class=\"s5\">f<\/span><span class=\"s11\">fect the BSP\u2019s thinking in June, assuming the breach of the 4% mark is only small and if core in<\/span><span class=\"s5\">f<\/span><span class=\"s11\">lation remains subdued and stable,\u201d Pantheon Chief Emerging Asia Economist Miguel Chanco said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">The Monetary Board kept its key policy rate steady at a 17-year high of 6.5% for a <span class=\"s5\">f<\/span>ifth straight meeting in May.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">From May 2022 to October 2023, the central bank has raised borrowing costs by 450 bps to tame in<span class=\"s5\">f<\/span>lation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p7\"><b>NO RATE HIKE<br \/>\n<\/b>Ms. Tan noted that the BSP is unlikely to deliver a rate hike this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s13\">\u201cIt is unlikely that inflation will sharply exceed the BSP\u2019s upper target of 4%, so we don\u2019t expect any more hikes. A cooling core inflation reading will also give BSP confidence <\/span><span class=\"s11\">to keep the policy rate steady,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s11\">Philippine National Bank (PNB) economist Alvin Joseph A. Arogo said that the BSP should not reduce rates until in<\/span><span class=\"s7\">f<\/span><span class=\"s11\">lation can settle \u201csustainably\u201d within target.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">\u201cMoreover, our monetary authorities should not cut ahead of the Fed or else risk further exchange rate weakness. If the Fed eases by 25 bps each in September and December, this opens the room for the BSP to follow in October and December,\u201d Mr. Arogo added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">On May 21, the peso closed at P58.27 against the greenback, its <span class=\"s5\">f<\/span>irst time closing at the P58-per-dollar level since Nov. 10, 2022.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">Ruben Carlo O. Asuncion, chief economist at Union Bank of the Philippines, Inc., said a rate cut would likely be delivered later this year, but not before the US Federal Reserve.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s11\">\u201cWith in<\/span><span class=\"s5\">f<\/span><span class=\"s11\">lation plateauing in the near-term despite the drought e<\/span><span class=\"s5\">f<\/span><span class=\"s11\">fects alongside a benign core, we believe the risks to the outlook has moderated that support a BSP rate cut later in the year,\u201d he said in an e-mail. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">\u201cWe do not believe the BSP will cut its policy rate before the Fed because the Monetary Board will wait until El Ni\u00f1o effects have receded, local food supply has normalized, and rice inflation has materially narrowed,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">The Federal Reserve is more likely to deliver a long-awaited rate cut in September after a US Commerce department report showed in<span class=\"s5\">f<\/span>lation made a bit of progress toward the Fed\u2019s 2% goal last month and spending softened, traders expect, Reuters reported.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s11\">After the data release, traders priced in about a 53% chance of a rate cut in September, versus about 49% before the report. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">Mr. Dacanay likewise said that rate cuts are o<span class=\"s5\">f<\/span>f the table until the Fed turns more dovish.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">\u201cThe timing will be important to provide some support to the peso throughout the BSP\u2019s easing cycle,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div>HEADLINE INFLATION likely quickened for a fourth straight month in May, mainly due to a spike in electricity costs, analysts said.<\/div>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":19044,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"nf_dc_page":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[14644,229,4285,252,170,3132,11],"class_list":["post-19043","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-uncategorized","tag-bworldonline","tag-hit","tag-inflation","tag-likely","tag-may","tag-poll","tag-years"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.0 -
