The 1 Java Street project in Brooklyn, New York was selected as the Building and Construction Division Project of the Year of the Plastics Pipe Institute, Inc.<\/a> (PPI) at its 2023 awards event. A distinct characteristic of the project is that it will be the largest mixed-use development in New York State<\/a> to incorporate a geothermal system for heating and cooling when it is completed in 2025.<\/p>\n

The geothermal system of the project will have 321 vertical boreholes drilled 499 feet into the ground. These will be space 15 feet apart with a 1.25 inch high-density polyethylene (HDPE) PE4710 pipe inserted into each. A total of 326,000 feet of plastic pipes were used in the boreholes with another 31,000 feet in various diameters used for lateral distribution.<\/p>\n

Versaprofiles, the manufacturer of the pipe, received the Project of the Year award from the Building and Construction Division of PPI.<\/p>\n

The PPI is the major North American trade association representing the plastic pipe industry. This year\u2019s awards were presented during the group\u2019s annual worldwide meeting held in Florida. Aside from the geothermal heat pump system in New York State, other winners included a fish habitat with HDPE conduit made from recycled content.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis year there were a very diverse group of projects submitted,\u201d<\/em> stated PPI President, David M. Fink.\u00a0 \u201cIt is amazing the vast variety of innovative undertakings that can be accomplished with our members\u2019 products in addition to those helping to improve our nation\u2019s infrastructure.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n
