A joint position paper on the wider use of geothermal energy is on the agenda of the next France-Germany parliamentary assembly set to take place on the 24th of June 2024. The assembly also seeks to mend the differences between policy between the two countries, paving the way for a joint approach in both hydrogen and geothermal.<\/p>\n

The assembly, which convenes twice a year, is composed of 100 lawmakers from the national parliaments of France and Germany. The assembly coordinates between the two national assemblies but cannot make laws.<\/p>\n

The joint position paper on geothermal aims to establish a French-German position on geothermal technology by 2025 and to facilitate a \u201cEuropean strategy to support geothermal energy<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cGeothermal energy offers great potential in the Franco-German border region in the Upper Rhine,\u201d<\/em> said Andres Jung, a CDU lawmaker from Germany. He further explained that building geothermal will require a cross-border framework for technologies, authorization, and security and that the two countries should\u00a0\u201ccontinue to drive forward the expansion of the European grids in a cross-border and intelligent manner\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n

The position paper will also call for a shared European strategy on hydrogen. The text promotes the openness to hydrogen of all colours but recognizes the primacy of green hydrogen.<\/p>\n
