Invest-NL<\/a>, the National Promotional Institute of the Netherlands, that looks into the experiences of other countries (Denmark, Germany, and France) with large-scale geothermal projects and how the lessons in these countries can be used to scale geothermal energy in the Netherlands. The report was prepared by the European Geothermal Energy Council<\/a> (EGEC) and Well Engineering Partners<\/a> (WEP).<\/p>\n

The report aims to identify bottlenecks for geothermal development in the Netherlands and the opportunities that can help accelerate geothermal deployment. The focus is on financial instruments, governance, social acceptance, permitting, and legislation. Learning from projects and market conditions in other European countries was considered a way for the Dutch geothermal sector to not have to \u201creinvent the wheel.\u201d<\/p>\n

The report emphasizes the effectivity of a multi-faceted approach to supporting geothermal, highlighting success factors from policy support and regulatory frameworks to market conditions and stakeholder engagement. Geothermal energy may be competitive at the end-user level but will still require support mechanisms to attract investors.<\/p>\n

Denmark has provided an example of how to strategically modify the heat provision through constant policies and legislation over long periods of time (>30 years). Furthermore, the French action plan<\/a> and the German geothermal expansion goal until 2030 are good examples of setting mid- and long-term target that help to provide security and attract investments. Thus, a Dutch geothermal roadmap with mid (203) and long-term (2040-205) objectives is essential.<\/p>\n

Through the support of stakeholders at both European and national levels, the geothermal industry can advocate for strong political leadership, favorable policy frameworks, and financial incentives. Moreover, cooperation, knowledge sharing, and strategic alliances can help in promoting effective geothermal and urban planning. By creating this ecosystem of cooperation, the Netherlands can chart a course towards a sustainable future based on geothermal energy.<\/p>\n
