The Municipal Government of Weihai City in Shandong Province, China is set to commence a 2-year geothermal exploration campaign to further understand the local geothermal resources and provide a scientific basis for further development and utilization. The campaign is planned to start by May 2024 and will continue to May 2026.<\/p>\n

Based on preliminary geological data and the plan for Weihai City\u2019s economic and social development, high-potential areas were identified for detailed studies \u2013 the Wenquan Tang geothermal field in Huancui District, Kunyu Mountain Area in Wendeng District, Qilitang-Daxi Valley Area, Dayingtang geothermal field, Hongshulantang geothermal field, and Xiaotang geothermal field.<\/p>\n

The initiative is aligned with the Provincial Government\u2019s support of geothermal an important component of implementing the dual-carbon strategy and facilitating a green, low-carbon, and high-quality development. Since 2023, the Provincial Government has formulated several measures to support the development and utilization of geothermal energy and encouraged exploration of geothermal resources.<\/p>\n

Previous studies done in Shandong Province done by the Shandong Bureau of Coal Geology have identified four reserves of hot dry rock<\/a>, which equal about 18.8 billion tonnes of standard coal.<\/p>\n

Through the exploration campaign, the Municipal Government aims to provide a geological basis for the subsequent establishment of geothermal mining rights and provide data support for the scientific preparation of the \u201c15th Five-Year Plan\u201d Weihai City Mineral Resources Master Plan.\u201d<\/p>\n
