The British Geological Survey<\/a> has published has released the first digital version of the UK legacy geothermal catalogue of subsurface temperature measurements, rock thermal conductivity measurements, and heat flow calculations.<\/p>\n

Version 1 of the UK legacy geothermal catalogue is available online (https:\/\/doi.org\/10.5285\/05569ed5-db0e-4587-807c-58e39ee240fa<\/a>) with an accompanying user guide<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0legacy<\/span>\u00a0geothermal catalogue\u00a0comprises data contained in numerous historic technical reports from the 1977 to 1991 Geothermal Energy Programme. This was delivered by BGS and funded by the then\u00a0UK<\/span>\u00a0Department of Energy and the European Commission.<\/p>\n

The digital release contains 11\u00a0821 data points derived from 743 sites, comprising 77\u00a0per cent of the\u00a0legacy<\/span>\u00a0geothermal catalogue dataset held by BGS. Alongside this,\u00a0five of the original programme reports<\/a>\u00a0have been released onto the\u00a0NERC Open Research Archive<\/a>. Future releases of the\u00a0legacy<\/span>\u00a0data are planned, for which the intellectual property rights (IPR) and validation checks are more complex.<\/p>\n

Detailed subsurface information is required to increase the uptake of geothermal energy technologies. This will contribute to\u00a0UK<\/span>\u00a0net zero targets through decarbonisation of heat, along with energy security. The\u00a0legacy<\/span>\u00a0UK<\/span>\u00a0geothermal catalogue is a significant compilation of data to inform geothermal assessments.<\/p>\n

Dr Alison Monaghan, BGS Head of Geothermal, said: \u201cThis open release of the\u00a0legacy<\/span>\u00a0geothermal catalogue makes a significant dataset more accessible, to support the development of geothermal energy and heat decarbonisation onshore\u00a0UK<\/span>.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cIt may be used to inform pre-feasibility stages of projects or for research and innovation. The user guide describes acknowledged limitations of this first release of a\u00a0legacy<\/span>\u00a0dataset. The aim is for future releases to include more recent data.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

This data is released under the\u00a0Open Government Licence 3.0<\/a>\u00a0and is a step towards Recommendation 3,\u00a0<\/em>improving data<\/em> availability and accessibility<\/a>, of the 2023 Deep Geothermal White Paper<\/a>.<\/p>\n
