Ely Eleandre Basiño Buendia, known as Ely Buendia, is a multi-talented Filipino musician, singer, songwriter, and author. He rose to prominence as the guitarist, lead vocalist, and chief songwriter of the renowned ‘Eraserheads,’ a Filipino alternative rock band formed in 1989. Additionally, he served as the lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist of ‘Pupil,’ a Filipino rock band formed in the late 2000s.

Born on November 2, 1970, in Naga City, Buendia grew up in a musically inclined family. He honed his musical skills from a young age, learning the guitar from his mother and eventually pursuing his passion for music throughout his education. While studying cinema at the University of the Philippines Diliman, Buendia, along with Raimund Marasigan, Marcus Adoro, and Buddy Zabala, formed Eraserheads in December 1989. The band quickly gained popularity for their original compositions, marking the emergence of the underground college rock movement in the Philippines.

Eraserheads signed a three-year contract with BMG Pilipinas and released their debut album ‘Ultraelectromagneticpop!’ in 1993, featuring hit singles like ‘Pare Ko.’ The band’s success skyrocketed, earning them a dedicated fanbase and numerous accolades, including the MTV Asia Viewer’s Choice Award for their music video ‘Ang Huling El Bimbo.’

Despite their immense success, Eraserheads disbanded after a decade together. Buendia continued to make significant contributions to Filipino music through his solo endeavors and collaborations. He reunited with Eraserheads for a one-night-only performance in 2008, demonstrating his enduring influence and legacy in the music industry.

Buendia’s impact transcends his musical compositions; he is revered as a national treasure and a symbol of the vibrant music scene in the Philippines. His songs resonate with audiences, reflecting the hopes, challenges, and aspirations of Filipinos across generations. His influence is evident in the continuous support he receives from fans, as demonstrated by social media engagement and fan surveys.
